The Channel District, which once encompassed an area known as the Estuary, along with a gritty industrial waterfront that served Tampa’s shipping and warehouse economy, began its transformation when the Port Authority acquired much of the depressed area and launched a modernization effort. Over time, aging docks, warehouses, and rail infrastructure gave way to redevelopment, paving the way for the mixed-use urban neighborhood of residences, restaurants, entertainment venues, and pedestrian-friendly streets that define the Channel District today.

The older Gandy photo was taken after the construction of the Florida Aquarium and during the construction of The Towers in the early 2000s.
