Although many buildings were constructed in the 1920s, the fire station at Platt and Magnolia was considered close enough to cover fires on the islands for decades. In 1957, Mayor Nick Nuccio agreed to build a station there. Some wanted it built at Peter O. Knight Airport, but the decision to construct the new facility at 601 E Davis Blvd. was finalized in 1958. The City of Tampa Fire Station No.17 was dedicated and opened in April 1959.
