This aerial view shows Tampa Municipal Hospital on Davis Islands, the predecessor to Tampa General Hospital. Opened in 1927 with 186 beds, the hospital was built on land donated by developer D.P. Davis and served as Tampa's primary public hospital until it was renamed Tampa General Hospital in 1956.
Since then, the hospital has undergone tremendous growth and modernization. Over the decades, hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in expanding and upgrading the facility, transforming it into one of Florida's leading academic medical centers.
Today, Tampa General is in the midst of a major $550 million expansion as part of its Master Facility Plan. Construction cranes visible in the contemporary photograph mark the site of the future Taneja Surgical, Neuroscience & Transplant Tower. The 13-story, 565,000-square-foot medical pavilion is being built on the site of the hospital's former rehabilitation center and will feature 144 patient beds, 32 operating suites, expanded intensive care capacity, advanced sterile processing facilities, and dedicated education and training spaces. The state-of-the-art tower is expected to open in 2028, continuing a nearly century-long tradition of growth and innovation on Davis Islands.
